After a little soul searching I have come to the difficult decision to stop writing this blog. With everything that is going on in my life at the moment I don't have the time to dedicate to blogging any more. Over the years blogs have transformed into something that I just don't like. When I first started blogging blogs were almost like a diary. I personal peek into someone's life, their likes and dislikes, their passions and the things they fill their days with. These days blogs seem to be almost like online magazines. The photos are edited and photoshoped and the words sells us an ideal life with a heavy emphasis on product placement.

I stopped reading magazines a long time ago when I decided that the fake images they portray are unobtainable and make women feel bad about themselves and I feel blogs are going the same way. Bloggers only portray the good in their lives and create beautiful ideal worlds that everyone would love to live in. The negative and ugly are edited out and what is left is an unobtainable ideal.

Over the years it has become all to easy to envy these ideal lives created by other bloggers and to feel a pang of jealousy and a little competitiveness. It is all to easy to compare myself to other bloggers and feel that I am falling sort when I don't have as many followers and don't get as many offers for advertising and collaborations and I feel this is an unhealthy frame of mind.

I have also discovered that over the years 'readers' have become far more interested in pictures than the written word and most don't even bother to read posts. I read many beautiful blogs with stunning photography but the written word portrays the blogger's personality and soul more than any image ever could. For me the words are the very heart of the post but it seems these days people are more interested in the instant gratification a picture can give and are more concerned with a superficial image than personality that comes through a blogger's words. It seems the written word is a dying art and this saddens me.

Aside from this I feel I spend too much time thinking about whether an outfit or experience would make a good blog post and desperately trying to photograph and document it rather than enjoying it in that moment. I don't want to live my life looking though a camera lens and this is a big reason that I have decided to stop writing the blog.

Over the years the blog has bought me many opportunities and new friends. I have done things I never would have thought possible such as modelling at the love vintage shows and have met many amazing people I feel honoured to call my friends. So it is with a heavy heart I say goodbye for now. Who knows what will happen in the future I may decide to resurrect the blog but for now I look forward to living my life without worrying about creating content for other people. For those who still want a peak into my life I will still be posting on Instagram @emmapowick.

And so all that is left to say is goodbye dear readers its been one hell of a ride!

A few months ago on a rare night off for the Hubby we went to see The Sun Records All Stars at Ballina RSL. We joined a table with a lovely bunch of oldies who were reminiscing about seeing Elvis and co in their youth and told us we were way too young to be there!

The Sun Records All-Stars feature Gino Monopoli who makes a very handsome Elvis Presley, Roy LeBlanc as Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, Joe Passion as Jerry Lee Lewis and Bill Culp as Carl Perkins. The quartet perform all the hits from Sun Records and were thoroughly entertaining.

The Hubby and I had such a great night that by the end of the night we were horse from singing, whooping and screaming!
OK so this post is way overdue and I did consider not posting it but I wanted to share my opinion on some fab products. The Lush Australia valentines collections was a little bit of a disappointment as they only released four 5 items: The Kiss Lip Scrub, The Lovers Lamp bath bomb, The Unicorn Horn, Prince Charming Shower Gel (which I sadly missed out on) and the Roses All the Way Soap

I also ordered a few of the last of the sale items left from Christmas: Lord of Misrule Shower Scream (which I have reviewed before) the Parsley Porridge soap and Miranda soap.

I topped off my order with the Relax gift set which contains: Twilight Shower Gel, Phoenix Rising Bath Bomb and The French Kiss Bubble Bar.

The Kiss Lip Scrub is a lovely sweet candy scented sugar scrub with little hearts in it. It is a lot softer consistency than the Santa's Lip Scrub which makes it a lot easier to use. This scrub is fantastic to help create the perfect pucker for all those valentines smooches.

The Unicorn Horn was a real pleasant surprise for me. Having not tried this product before I expected it to have a sickly sweet candy scent like snow fairy but it is actually a beautiful floral lavender scent. This is a new fave of my and I will definitely be snapping up more next year!

The Roses all the Way Soap was a lovely product but I am really not into rose scented products and this one is particularly strong so I think perhaps it is not for me!

The Lovers Lamp Bath bomb is one that I had heard a lot about from fellow Lushies. I heard that it has a chocolate orange scent but I found that the scent was quit weak and when it hit the water I could not detect the scent at all. It does create a beautiful display though releasing lovely confetti hearts into the water and cocoa butter heart that melt to make the skin silky smooth. The only downside to this was having to clean the greasy tub after.

The Miranda soap (pictured above) was not as pretty as the one in the picture but it does have a lovely almost kiwi like scent and feels silky on the skin!

The Parsley Porridge soap really was not for me. The idea of smelling like parsley is simply not appealing!

The Relax gift box is a new favourite of mine contain three of my new favourite products!

The French Kiss bubble bar is a gorgeous lavender scent that helps lure you to sleep.

The Phoenix Rising bath bomb has a deliciously spicy cinnamon scent. This bomb is unique in that it is designed to sink to the bottom of the tub and then spring back up like the phoenix. It leaves the tub with a stunning purple and gold bathing experience.

The Twilight Shower Gel is my my favourite Lush product of all time. I just wish that Lush would make it a regular product. Twilight Shower Gel shares its scent with the Twilight bath bomb and is a beautiful blend of lavender, ylang, ylang and malt that will sooth you to sleep. This product really does smell amazing!
The Hubby and I don't really celebrate Valentine Day but this year we saw that our local RSL were holding a Valentines Luncheon. As we haven't spent much time together in recent weeks due to the Hubby working 7 days a week we decided to book a table.

The meal was held in the upstairs Spinnakers restaurant with views overlooking the Richmond river. We started off with a glass on wine and were entertained by ... on the piano whilst waiting for our first course. I opted for the pork belly and the Hubby had salt and pepper squid.
On Friday night I hopped on a plane to Sydney then hotfooted it across the city luggage in tow to meet up with the Purple Fairy and Jodie at Mrs Macquarie's Chair to attend Lush's scented cinema showing of Mamma Mia. The event was part of the Sydney Mardi Gras and Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Choir were performing.

After a wine tasting from Barefoot Wine and grabbing a bottle to enjoy during the performance (and some complimentary t.shirts) we found our seats and opened our box of scented props.

The night kicked off with some pre show entertainment and an ABBA quiz hosted by Richard Reid and then a stunning performance from the Gay and Lesbian Choir before the movie itself started on the big screen.

Each attendee had a box with props in to be sniffed at the appropriate moment during the movie so it was a true sensory experience. Although I have to admit that we were having such a good time singing along to the songs and joking with our fellow audience members that or box of props got abandoned half way through the night. However we did have fun at the end of the night sniffing the items we'd missed and guessing the Lush scents (although they were all listed on the prop card for us as you can see above!)

We had such a fantastic night at the Mardi Gras Scented Cinema that I was surprised that there wasn't a bigger turnout for the event. I hope that this won't dissuade the organisers from hosting this event in the future as I for one will certainly be booking tickets for any future events of this kind.
I ordered:

Firecracker Gift Set:

As previously mentioned I tried to get my hands on the Firecracker Gift set in the Lush.com.au boxing day sale but it was whipped up super fast and I missed out so when I saw it was still on sale on Lush.co.uk I could not resist. The set contains The Experimenter bath bomb, Intergalactic Bath Bomb and Candy Mountain bubble bar none of which, I believe are available yet here in Oz.

As for the products inside:

Candy Mountain Bubble Bar was my least favourite of the three. This product is Snow fairy Scented and which is a sickly sweet candy scent which just isn't for me.

Intergalactic is a new favourite of mine. It is visually stunning bomb exploded in a big bang that leaves a galaxy of stars in your bath. With gorgeous gold luster and a mint fresh scent this ones a real star!

The Experimenter was a disappointment for me. I have seen so many pictures of baths with this product with rainbow technicolour bursting out but I can't help but think I must have got a dud as my bath bomb fizzed and dissipated quickly to leaving a grey blue sparkly bath.

Skydancer - Far From The Madding Guns Bath Bomb:
I could not resist this bath bomb as profits from them help fund equipment to satellite tag many endangered hen harrier chicks born in the coming years. I as intrigued by the mix of lemon and liquorice scent. When I popped with one in the bath it whizzed around the tub with a bird soaring around. The scent was deliciously citrussy and zesty and I could not really detect any liquorice.

Yoga Bomb Bath Bomb:
I have been trying to get my hands on this delicious looking bomb for some time. I believe it was in some of the Christmas sets over here in Oz this year. It looked so beautiful I just had to try one for myself and I'm glad I did as this has become a firm favourite. Not only does it look divine in the bath with a psychedelic rainbow of colour bursting from within but the scent is delicious.
Recently I have been reading Immodesty Blaize's second book Ambition and wondering what Britain's favourite showgirl is up to these days. It seems my question has been answered as Immodesty has just launched a range of beautiful dresses with The Pretty Dress Company.

Entitled The Immodesty Blaize Edit the collection consists of 12 stunning dresses inspired by some of Immodesty's idols such as Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner in Barefoot Contessa, Maria Callas, and Maria Felix and wiggle dresses inspired by the ‘bombshell walk’ of icons like Monroe and Mansfield. Immodesty describes the collection as ones that will

'take you from daytime, to cocktail, to red carpet. From hourglass, boned, pencil dresses and classic black basics, to luxurious soft, velvet wiggle dresses, sparkling micro-sequins, prom and swing silhouettes – and of course – one of my favourite motifs, plenty of roses. The embroidered rose prom with its inbuilt petticoats and sheer overlay is a stand out piece, also the floor-length Fatale dress with its hourglass fishtail shape for timeless bombshell glamour'

I personally could not agree more. The gorgeous silhouettes in this collection will flatter women of any shape and size. Personally I have my eye on the beautiful Fatale Embroidered Prom dress but unfortunately at £315 its a little out of my price range.

As for Miss Blaize herself it seems she has another book in the pipeline (non fiction this time) and a burlesque opera in the works. I wait for those with baited breath!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8721652661174396460.post-82622749163719182612016-01-31T10:00:00.000+11:002016-01-31T10:00:04.472+11:00What Emma Did - 30th January 2016

A month or so ago Modcloth offered a Stylish Surprise sale so I snapped up 5 pairs of shoes at $10 each and 5 dresses at $20 each. I have to say that I have not been as successful in this order as I have previous Stylish Surprise orders but there are still items I would wear.

For shoes I received:
They're leather and retail for $139.99 so a steal at $10

Abroad Boots - These remind me of riding boots. I have some great outfits in mind using these as long as the weather gets cold enough here this winter. They retail at $159.99 so another steal for $10.

So Wrapped Up Sandals - I love the cut out on the these sandals but I'm not a fan of the wrap lace style so I think I will cut them down to just an ankle tie but they will definitely be worn this summer. They normally retail at $24.99 so $10 isn't bad.

These boots from Rocketdog are soo not me however they are just the kind of thing the Purple Fairy likes and she has a serious boot obsession so they will be going to her. I cannot find them on Modcloth but they seem good quality so $10 is a very good price.

In dresses I got:

Always in Style dress - I can see this simple jersey dress will be getting a lot of wear from me. It is so easy to dress up or down and accessorize in a number of different ways. This dress originally sold for $49.99 so the $20 I paid for it isn't bad.

Chantilly Dream Dress - When I pulled this dress out of the box I wasn't very impressed however it looks a lot better on. It needs a belt though. This dress normally retails at $64.99 so for just $20 I'm pretty happy.

This is another one that I took out of the box and didn't like. I'm not really one for this beigey coffee colour. However when I tried it on I really liked it!

I think it would have been a little on the short side compared to what I like to wear anyway so I' going to give this one away. This one originally retailed at $54.99 so I got a good deal on it.

I love the print on this dress but found the top a bit baggy and boxy. I'm sure I can do something with it though.

So all in all not a bad haul. Not my best but there are definately some items I will wear. Will I do the next Stylish Surprise sale? Of course! It seems Lush are extending their Boxing Day sale this year as they are selling off some of the old designs of items on the website as well as listing a few more Christmas gift boxes at half price. When I saw these items on the sale page I could not resist so I made an order. I thought I would give you a little review of the products I ordered.

I ordered:
<span style="background-color: white; color: #e06666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 14px;">♥ The Summer Garden gift which contains Respect your Elders soap, Rose Jam Shower Gel, and Love and Light handcream
<span style="background-color: white; color: #e06666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 14px;">♥ Sunnyside bubble bar

The lovely people at Lush also threw in free samples of: Roots hair treatment and Mask of Magnanimity face mask (which I did not try as I think it will be too strong for my sensitive skin!) and Lemony Flutter which is a favourite of mine!

A few of the items, the rose jam shower gels, rose jam bubbleroon and the creamy candy bubbleroon I sold on eBay as the scent was just too sweet for me so I can't really review those.

OK so now for my reviews:

Respect your Elders Soap - This one actually grew on me over time. When I first smelt it out of the package I wasn't sure I liked it but once I'd lathered it up I loved it. With a gorgeous Elderberry scent this one is a new fav!

Nightwing Shower Jelly - While I'm not a huge fan of the shower jelly concept (way to hard to wash with without dropping a million times!) I loved the lime pastile scent of this one and found it very moisturising.

Lord of Misrule Shower Scream - Lord of Misrule is an absolute favourite of mine scent wise but I found the shower cream just a little too thin and runny and found it separated a bit when left to stand. I wish they'd bring out a shower gel but I love the scent so much that I will persevere until they do.

Porridge Soap - I love the exfoliating element of this soap but the scent is just not for me

Love and Light hand cream and Dream cream - To my nose this creams smelt very similar. Both had a very strong geranium scent which does not appeal to me. I prefer my moisturiser a bit thicker like my favourite Lemony Flutter.

French Kiss bubble bar - This has become a new favourite of mine. The gorgeous lavender scent is perfect for a bedtime bath.

Blue Skies and Fluffy white clouds bubble bar - The scent of this bubble bar is actually quite masculine. It reminds me of an aftershave my dad used to wear. (I think it might be Aramis) I loved the blue water and the soft white bubble that did look like a blue sky with fluffy white clouds!

Pop in the bath bubble bar - This bubble bar is pleasant enough but failed to make much of an impression on me. It has a subtle fresh scent and is moisturising to the skin.
Sunny Side bubble bar - This is also a new favourite. The gorgeous citrus scent is great to wake you up in the morning.
Green bubbleroon - I loved the fresh grassy scent of the roon but when it hit the water the bubble smelt to much like washing up liquid to be enjoyable. Perhaps the new version is different!
Roots hair treatment - I know their are Lushies that rave about Roots but it just wasn't for me. I found it too thick to spread properly onto my scalp and once it was on the tingle from the 3 types of mint was just a bit too intense. The scent was off-putting to me as it reminded me of headlice treatment!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8721652661174396460.post-2089241905777726012016-01-24T11:22:00.001+11:002016-01-24T11:46:11.447+11:00What Emma Did - 24th Jan 2016

After trying out all the products that I ordered in the Lush Boxing Day Sale I thought I'd give you a run down of what I loved and hated:

Frozen Bath Bomb
The Frozen bath bomb is a relatively new product inspired by the Disney movie. With scents of grapefruit and neroli, an enchanting blue colour and stunning silver lustre it looks like a magical snowstorm in the bath. I loved this one and will definitely be buying more in the future.

Snowman FUN
This was one of two FUN products I have bought recently along with the Santa FUN and although they are (as the name states) fun they don't really do a great job at any of their uses. In the bath they work ok as bubble bath but the bubble bars are much more bubbly. As a body wash they are awkward to use as if you grab a little bit to wash with it is difficult to use much like using the end of a bar of soap and again it doesn't foam that much and I also found that the red FUN almost stains the skin and you really have to work to wash it off. As a shampoo I found that it was very drying to my hair

Baked Alaska Soap
My slice of Baked Alaska soap does not look as beautiful as it does in the pictures on the Lush website but that does not bother me because it smells so amazing! Baked Alaska has a gorgeous citrusy grapefruit scent that is sure to wake you up in the morning.

Snowman Shower Jelly
I haven't bought shower jellies from Lush before as I always thought they'd be a bit difficult to keep hold of in the shower. I found this is the case a little but the Snowman Shower Jelly smells so good that I will definitely persevere with it. The Snowman is scented with bergamot and Sicilian lemon oils and smells absolutely divine. Not only does it smell good but it is super moisturising. What's more these jellies get surprisingly sudsy. I really didn't expect it to soap up that much but they really do!
First Snow Dusting Powder
Dusting powders is not a product I really use so First Snow is not the kind of thing I would have picked up if it wasn't part of the gift set I ordered. Having said that it is scented with gorgeous citrus of sweet orange and lime oils. For a powder this product is surprisingly moisturising and leave skin soft and silky with a subtle shimmer. The only downside of this powder is the scent is not very long lasting and with such a lovely scent you really want it to last!
Christingle Body Conditioner
I've heard people rave about this product but on first try I found it rather disappointing. The scent really does not appeal to me as it smells just like toothpaste and I didn't feel any of the tingling sensation described. I think perhaps I did not use enough of the product or rub it in long enough.

Fizzbanger Bath Bomb
Lush website describes the Fizzbanger as having apple and cinnamon scents but I found it to be quite citrussy. I loved the beautiful colours it created in my bath and the after scent that reminded me of Lord of Misrule a little.

Luxury Lush Pud Bath Bomb
This bath bomb arrived a little battered as you can see from the picture but it did not really detract from the beauty of the product. The pud bath bomb turns the bath water an array of rainbow colours and smells divine. This one is definitely on my list for next Christmas!

Stardust Bath Bomb
The Stardust was the most disappointing product of the haul for me but I kind of expected it to be as I'm not a huge fan of vanilla scented items. However it was not only the scent that was disappointing but the fact that visually this bomb does very little. After it dissolves you are left with a slightly blue tinted water with white lustre and a scent which does not last very long at all!

Yog Nog Soap
I bought the Yog Nog soap because I loved the scent of the bath bomb but hated how greasy it was. Yog Nog has a gorgeous toffee like scent with an almost alcoholic undertone which perfectly matches the Christmas drink from which it derives its name. The soap has a beautiful creamy texture that feels lovely on the skin. Far from just sitting on the side of my handbasin this one if perfect for the shower. Thus soap smells good enough to eat!

Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub
This was one of the free samples that the lovely people at Lush threw in for me to try and I just loved it. I used it on wet skin in the shower and found it was exfoliating without being to harsh on the skin and left my skin super soft and moisturised from the lovely oils in it. It also smells delicious. The tub states that you can also use this dry as a harsher scrub and I know some people that use it on their faces but with my ultra sensitive skin I wasn't brave enough to try this out. The tub also says that you can use this in your hair which I tried but really its not the best for hair. I found it clumped in my hair and you really have to work to wash it out and after my hair felt quite dry but for the skin I love this product!
Golden Wonder Bath Bomb
The Golden Wonder Bath Bomb was not part of my boxing day sale buys it was actually part of my pre-Christmas haul but I hadn't tried it when I wrote the post about that shop so I just thought I'd tack it on the end here. Golden Wonder is definitely a Christmas fav of mine. his gorgeous golden lustered bomb is scented like a citrus champagne cocktail and explodes in the bath to reveal a turquoise and deep blue center and gold starsUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8721652661174396460.post-54051938812379299052016-01-17T11:56:00.001+11:002016-01-17T11:56:52.920+11:00What Emma Did - 17 January 2016

I had to work this Boxing Day so I could not head down to my local Lush store to see what goodies were to be had in store but luckily enough I did manage to get a spare few minutes to hop on-line when the half price sale went live and place my order. It seems from the comments on their Facebook page I may have done better than most Lushies. Here is what I managed to bag:

The Snow Time Gift Set
This wasn't really on my wishlist but my first choice the Firecracker gift set which contains two Oxford Street products the Experimenter and Intergalactic bath bombs sold out super fast. Lucky for me they are still on sale in the UK so I managed to grab this gift set from UK Lush along with some other bits (but that's for another post). Snow time was a bit of an impulse buy as it contains the Frozen bath bomb which I have been dying to try. At the time I did not remember that the Jugglers also contains Frozen but never mind. Snow time also contains Snowman FUN (200g), Baked Alaska Soap (120g), Snowman Shower Jelly (100g), First Snow Dusting Powder, Frozen Bath Bomb and Christingle Body Conditioner (50g) so for half price this was a great buy.

The Jugglers Gift Set:
The Jugglers has been on my watch list as it contains a Fizzbanger Bath Bomb, Luxury Lush Pud Bath Bomb and a Frozen Bath Bomb. None of which I have tried yet so my reviews for those will be coming up soon.

Holly Go Lightly Bubble Bar:
The Holly Go Lightly was one of my favourite Christmas Lush products this year. You can read my review of it here. It smells delicious and is perfect for soothing aching muscles so I picked up another one.

Old Father Time Soap:
Old Father Time was another Christmas favourite of mine so I grabbed some more before it disappears for another year!

Stardust Bath Bomb:
For some reason or another I never got around to picking up the Stardust bath bomb. I think perhaps the design seemed a little boring and vanilla sweet scents don't really appeal to me but it was half price so I grabbed one to try.

Yog Nog Soap :
I loved the Yog Nog scent but hated the greasiness of the bath bomb so I thought that the soap would be perfect for me.

The start of a new year means a new monthly muse and this month it is the original platinum blonde Jean Harlow. Jean Harlow was born Harlean Harlow Carpenter on 3rd March 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri. Her father was a dentist from a working-class background and her mother was the daughter of a wealthy real estate broker.

Mother Jean moved with Harlean to Hollywood in 1923 with hopes of becoming an actress, but was too old at 34 to begin a film career. When, finances dwindled her mother and she moved back to Kansas City after Skip Harlow issued an ultimatum that he would disinherit his daughter if she did not return. Several weeks later, Skip sent "Baby" to a summer camp called Camp Cha-Ton-Ka in Michigamme, Michigan, where Harlean became ill with scarlet fever. Mother Jean traveled to Michigan to care for her but was told that she could not see her daughter.

Harlow next attended the Ferry Hall School (now Lake Forest Academy) in Lake Forest, Illinois. Each freshman was paired with a "big sister" from the senior class, and Harlean's big sister introduced her to 19-year-old Charles "Chuck" McGrew, heir to a large fortune, in the fall of 1926. Soon the two began to date, and then married. On January 18, 1927.

Shortly after the wedding, the couple left Chicago and moved to Beverly Hills. McGrew turned 21 two months after the marriage and received part of his large inheritance. The couple moved to Los Angeles in 1928, settling into a home in Beverly Hills, where Harlean thrived as a wealthy socialite. McGrew hoped to distance Harlean from her mother with the move. Neither McGrew nor Harlean worked, and both, especially McGrew, were thought to drink heavily. The couple divorced in 1929.

In Los Angeles, Harlean befriended Rosalie Roy, a young aspiring actress. Lacking a car, Roy asked Harlean to drive her to Fox Studios for an appointment. Reputedly, Harlean was noticed and approached by Fox executives while waiting for her friend, but stated that she was not interested. Nevertheless, she was given dictated letters of introduction to Central Casting. A few days later, Rosalie Roy bet Harlean that she did not have the nerve to go and audition. Unwilling to lose a wager and pressed by her enthusiastic mother, Harlean drove to Central Casting and signed in under her mother's maiden name, Jean Harlow.

After several calls from Central Casting and a number of rejected job offers, Harlean was pressed into accepting work by her mother, now back in Los Angeles. She appeared in her first film, Honor Bound, as an unbilled extra for $7 a day. This led to small parts in feature films such as Moran of the Marines (1928), This Thing Called Love (1929), Close Harmony (1929), and The Love Parade (1929), among others. In December 1928, she signed a five-year contract with Hal Roach Studios for $100 per week.[17] She had a co-starring role in Laurel and Hardy's short Double Whoopee in 1929, and went on to appear in two more of their films: Liberty and Bacon Grabbers (both 1929).

In March 1929, however, she parted with Roach, who tore up her contract after Harlow told him, "It's breaking up my marriage, what can I do?" In June 1929, Harlow separated from her husband and moved in with her mother. After her separation from McGrew, Harlow worked as an extra in several movies. She landed her first speaking role in 1929's The Saturday Night Kid, starring Clara Bow.

In late 1929, she was spotted by James Hall, an actor filming Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels. Hughes, reshooting most of the originally silent film with sound, needed an actress to replace Greta Nissen, who had a Norwegian accent that was considered to be undesirable for her character. Harlow made a test and got the part.

Hughes signed Harlow to a five-year, $100-per-week contract on October 24, 1929. Hell's Angels premiered in Hollywood on May 27, 1930, at Grauman's Chinese Theater, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1930 . The movie made Harlow an international star.

With no projects planned for Harlow, Hughes sent her to New York, Seattle, and Kansas City for Hell's Angels premieres. In 1931, loaned out by Hughes' Caddo Company to other studios, she gained more attention when she appeared in The Secret Six, with Wallace Beery and Clark Gable; Iron Man, with Lew Ayres and Robert Armstrong; and The Public Enemy, with James Cagney. Though the successes of the films ranged from moderate to hit, Harlow's acting was mocked by critics. Concerned, Hughes sent her on a brief publicity tour which was not a success, as Harlow dreaded such personal appearances.

Harlow was next cast in Platinum Blonde (1931) with Loretta Young. The film, originally titled Gallagher, was renamed by Hughes to promote Harlow, capitalizing on her hair color, called "platinum" by Hughes' publicists. Though Harlow denied her hair was dyed, the platinum blonde color was reportedly achieved by bleaching with a weekly application of ammonia, Clorox bleach, and Lux soap flakes. This process weakened and damaged Harlow's naturally ash-blonde hair. Many female fans began dyeing their hair to match hers. Howard Hughes' team organized a series of "Platinum Blonde" clubs across the nation, with a prize of $10,000 to any beautician who could match Harlow's shade.

Harlow next filmed Three Wise Girls (1932) with Mae Clark and Walter Byron. Paul Bern then arranged to borrow her for The Beast of the City (1932), co-starring Walter Huston. After filming, Bern booked a 10-week personal-appearance tour on the East Coast. To the surprise of many, especially Harlow herself, she packed every theater in which she appeared, often appearing in a single venue for several nights. Despite critical disparagement and poor roles, Harlow's popularity and following was large and growing and, in February 1932, the tour was extended by six weeks.

According to Fay Wray, who played Ann Darrow in King Kong (1933), Harlow was the original choice to play the screaming blonde heroine. Because MGM put Harlow under exclusive contract during the preproduction phase of the film, she became unavailable for Kong, and the part went to the brunette Wray, wearing a blonde wig.

When Luciano crime family mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel went to Hollywood to expand casino operations, Harlow became the godmother of Siegel's eldest daughter Millicent.

Paul Bern, by now romantically involved with Harlow, spoke to Louis B. Mayer about buying out her contract with Hughes and signing her to MGM, but Mayer declined. MGM's leading ladies were presented as elegant, while Harlow's "floozy" screen persona was abhorrent to Mayer. Bern then began urging close friend Irving Thalberg, production head of MGM, to sign Harlow, noting her popularity and established image. After initial reluctance, Thalberg agreed and, on March 3, 1932, Harlow's 21st birthday, Bern called her with the news that MGM had purchased her contract from Hughes for $30,000. Harlow officially joined the studio on April 20, 1932.

At MGM, Harlow was given superior movie roles to show off her looks and nascent comedic talent. Though Harlow's screen persona changed dramatically during her career, one constant was her apparent sense of humor. In 1932, she starred in the comedy Red-Headed Woman, for which she received $1,250 a week. The film is often noted as being one of the few films in which Harlow did not appear with platinum blonde hair; she wore a red wig for the role. She next starred in Red Dust, her second film with Clark Gable. Harlow and Gable worked well together and co-starred in a total of six films. She was also paired multiple times with Spencer Tracy and William Powell. She was later paired with up-and-coming male co-stars such as Robert Taylor and Franchot Tone in an effort to boost their careers.

At this point, MGM began trying to distinguish Harlow's public persona from that of her screen characters, changing her childhood surname from common "Carpenter" to chic "Carpentier", claiming that writer Edgar Allan Poe was one of her ancestors and publishing photographs of Harlow doing charity work to change her image from that of a tramp to an all-American girl. This transformation proved difficult; once, Harlow was heard muttering, "My God, must I always wear a low-cut dress to be important?"

During the making of Red Dust, Bern, her husband of two months, was found shot dead at their home, creating a lasting scandal. Initially, Harlow was speculated to have killed Bern, but Bern's death was officially ruled a suicide. Louis B. Mayer feared negative publicity from the incident and intended to replace Harlow in the film, offering the role to Tallulah Bankhead.

After Bern's death, Harlow began an indiscreet affair with boxer Max Baer who, though separated from his wife Dorothy Dunbar, was threatened with divorce proceedings naming Harlow as a co-respondent for "alienation of affection", a legal term for adultery. After Bern's mysterious death, the studio did not want another scandal and defused the situation by arranging a marriage between Harlow and cinematographer Harold Rosson. Rosson and Harlow were friends and Rosson went along with the plan. They quietly divorced eight months later.

By 1933, MGM realized the value of the Harlow-Gable team and paired them again in Hold Your Man (1933), which was also a box-office success. The same year, she played the adulterous wife of Wallace Beery in the all-star comedy-drama Dinner at Eight, and played a pressured Hollywood film star in the screwball comedy Bombshell with Lee Tracy. The film has often been cited as being based on Harlow's own life or that of 1920s "It girl", Clara Bow.

The following year, she was teamed with Lionel Barrymore and Franchot Tone in The Girl from Missouri (1934). The film was the studio's attempt at softening Harlow's image, but suffered with censorship problems, so much so that its original title, Born to Be Kissed, had to be changed. Due to the financial success of Red Dust and Hold Your Man, MGM cast Harlow with Clark Gable in two more successful films: China Seas (1935), with Wallace Beery and Rosalind Russell, and Wife vs. Secretary (1936), with Myrna Loy and James Stewart.

From 1933 onward, Harlow was consistently voted one of the strongest box office draws in the United States, often outranking her fellow female colleagues at MGM in audience popularity polls. Reckless (1935) was her first movie musical. It co-starred her then-boyfriend William Powell and Franchot Tone. Although her character sings in the movie, Harlow's voice for the performance was dubbed by skilled vocalist Virginia Verrill. The film offered yet another incident of "arts meets life" for Harlow, as her character in the movie suffers the horrors of her husband's suicide.

By the mid-1930s, Harlow was one of the biggest stars in the United States, and it was hoped, MGM's next Greta Garbo. Still young, her star continued to rise while the popularity of other female stars at MGM, such as Garbo, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, and Luise Rainer, waned. Harlow's movies continued to make huge profits at the box office even during the middle of the Depression. Some credit them with keeping MGM profitable at a time when other studios were falling into bankruptcy. After her third marriage ended in 1934, Harlow met William Powell, another MGM star, and quickly fell in love. The couple was reportedly engaged for two years, but differences kept them from formalizing their relationship (she wanted children, he did not). Harlow also said that Louis B. Mayer would never allow them to marry.

Suzy (1936), in which she played the title role, gave her top billing over Franchot Tone and Cary Grant. While critics noted that Harlow dominated the film, they added that her performance was imperfect, and the film was a reasonable box-office success. She then starred in Riffraff (1936) with Spencer Tracy and Una Merkel, a financial disappointment, and the worldwide hit Libeled Lady (1936), in which she was top billed over Powell, Myrna Loy, and Tracy. She then filmed W.S. Van Dyke's comedy Personal Property (1937), co-starring Robert Taylor. It was Harlow's final fully completed motion picture appearance.

Jean suffered from scarlet fever at the age 15 in 1926. This may have contributed to her untimely death from kidney disease on June 7, 1937, at the age of 26.

In January 1937, Harlow and Robert Taylor traveled to Washington, DC, to take part in fundraising activities associated with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's birthday. The trip was physically taxing for Harlow and she contracted influenza. She recovered in time to attend the Academy Awards ceremony with Powell.

Production for Harlow's final film Saratoga, co-starring Clark Gable, was scheduled to begin filming in March 1937. However, production was delayed when she developed septicemia after a wisdom tooth extraction and had to be hospitalized. After she recovered, shooting began on April 22. On May 20, 1937, while shooting Saratoga, Harlow began to complain of illness. Her symptoms—fatigue, nausea, water weight and abdominal pain—did not seem very serious to her doctor, who believed she was suffering from cholecystitis and influenza. However, he was apparently unaware that Harlow had been ill during the previous year with a severe sunburn and influenza. Her friend and co-star Myrna Loy noticed Harlow’s grey complexion, fatigue, and weight gain. On May 29, Harlow was shooting a scene in which the character she was playing had a fever. Harlow was clearly sicker than her character, and when she leaned against co-star Gable between scenes, said, "I feel terrible. Get me back to my dressing room." Harlow requested that the assistant director telephone William Powell, who left his own set to escort Harlow back home.

On May 30, Powell checked on Harlow, and when he found her condition unimproved, recalled her mother from a holiday trip and summoned her doctor. Harlow's illnesses had delayed three previous films (Wife vs. Secretary, Suzy, and Libeled Lady), so there was no great concern initially. On June 2, it was announced that Harlow was suffering from influenza. Dr. Ernest Fishbaugh, who had been called to Harlow's home to treat her, diagnosed her with an inflamed gallbladder. Harlow felt better on June 3 and co-workers expected her back on the set by Monday, June 7. Press reports were contradictory, with headlines like "Jean Harlow seriously ill" and "Harlow past illness crisis."Clark Gable, who visited her during these days, later said that she was severely bloated and that he smelled urine on her breath when he kissed her—both signs of kidney failure.

Dr. Leland Chapman, a colleague of Fishbaugh's called in to give a second opinion, recognized that she was not suffering from an inflamed gallbladder, but was in the end stages of kidney failure. On June 6, Harlow said that she could not see Powell properly and could not tell how many fingers he was holding up. That evening, Harlow was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, where she slipped into a coma. The next day at 11:37 am, Harlow died in the hospital at the age of 26. In the doctor’s press releases, the cause of death was given as cerebral edema, a complication of kidney failure.

For years, rumors circulated about Harlow's death. Some claimed that her mother had refused to call a doctor because she was a Christian Scientist or that Harlow herself had declined hospital treatment or surgery. Also rumors related that Harlow had died because of alcoholism, a botched abortion, over-dieting, sunstroke, poisoning due to platinum hair dye, or various venereal diseases. However, medical bulletins, hospital records, and testimony of her relatives and friends prove it was kidney disease. From the onset of her illness, resting at home, Harlow had been attended by a doctor; two nurses visited her house and various equipment was brought from a nearby hospital. Yet, it seems also true that Harlow’s mother had barred some visitors, such as the MGM doctor, who later stated that she did so because she was a Christian Scientist. It has been suggested that she still wanted to control her daughter, but no evidence supports the allegation that she refused medical care for Harlow

Harlow was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale in the Great Mausoleum in a private room of multicolored marble which William Powell bought for $25,000. She was buried in the gown she wore in Libeled Lady, and in her hands, she held a white gardenia and a note that Powell had written: "Goodnight, my dearest darling." The simple inscription on Harlow's grave is "Our Baby."

MGM planned to replace Harlow in Saratoga with either Jean Arthur or Virginia Bruce, but due to public objections, the film was finished using three doubles (one for close-ups, one for long shots and one for dubbing Harlow's lines) and rewriting some scenes without her. The film was released on July 23, 1937, less than two months after Harlow's death, and was a hit with audiences. It became MGM's second-highest grossing picture of 1937.

At the time of Harlow's death, MGM was planning for Harlow to star in a series of films as Maisie. She was replaced by Ann Sothern.

Legacy:

Harlow wrote a novel entitled Today is Tonight. In Arthur Landau's introduction to the 1965 paperback edition, Harlow stated her intention to write the book around 1933–34 but it was not published during her lifetime. After her death, Landau writes, her mother sold the film rights to MGM, though no film was made. The publication rights were passed from Harlow's mother to a family friend and the book was finally published in 1965.

In 1965, two films about Jean Harlow were released, both called Harlow. The first film was released by Magna in May 1965 and stars Carol Lynley. The second was released in June 1965 by Paramount Pictures and stars Carroll Baker. Both were poorly received and did not perform well at the box office. In 1978, Lindsay Bloom portrayed her in Hughes and Harlow: Angels in Hell. In 2004, Gwen Stefani briefly appeared as Harlow in Martin Scorsese's Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator.

In August 1993, Sharon Stone hosted a documentary about Harlow entitled Harlow: The Blonde Bombshell, which aired on Turner Classic Movies

Its been so long that I have had a chance to blog that I thought I would catch you up on some of the thing I got up to whilst on hiatus. Way back at the beginning of November the Hubby's Dad and his friend came to stay. He is a steam train enthusiast so we headed into Brisbane on Sunday morning to for Steam Train Sunday.
I decided to take one of the dresses I picked up in the Modcloth Stylish Surprise Sale a spin so here is a pic of my outfit for the day. After our jaunt around the city we headed up to Mount Coot-tha reserve for a spot of lunch at Kuta Cafe whilst enjoying the view before heading back down the hill for a wander around the botanic gardens. I leave you with our piccies from around the gardens:

I have been a long time lover of Lush ever since I followed my nose to their Covent Garden store about 20 years ago! however it has been a while since I have made a purchase from them other than the odd Tisty Tosty bath bomb.

Just before Christmas my Lush obsession was rekindled and I ordered myself an early Christmas present. The picture above is my haul. When some of the items I wanted to order were not available online I dropped into my local store to pick up a few odd items for myself and a few Christmas pressies.

If you follow me on Instagram you would probably be bombarded with my pictures of my lush baths and various products but I thought I would review my haul on the blog so here goes:

The Good:

One of my favourite item that I ordered was the Lord of Misrule bath bomb. I got this as part of the Merry Christmas gift box and it was the first item I tried out. The Lord of Misrule is a limited edition Christmas (or possibly Halloween) bath bomb which is green in colour and smells deliciously spicy.

Another firm favourite was the Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter this cream has a beautiful lemony scent and is so moisturising that I use it as a regular hand cream to help my poor battered hands. When I use this I just can't stop smelling my hands the scent is sooo good!

I also loved the Holly Golightly Bubble Bar. Not only does this bubble bar have a fantastic name but it smells amazing too. To me it smells a lot like the Wiccy Magic Muscles massage bar. This limited edition Christmas bubble bar has a lovely cinnamon scents with hints of lime. Not only does it turn the water as green as the grinch but it helps soothe tired muscles.

I also loved the Spirit of Christmas bubble wand which is like bathing with a pomander. This is also as limited edition Christmas product. It smells amazing and will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit. The only downside to this one was it fell off its cinnamon stick after a couple of uses.

My new favourite bath bomb (sorry Tisty Tosty) has to be Twilight. The lavender and ylang ylang scent is divine and will send you off to the land of nod in no time. Not only that but it is so pretty with lilac and turquoise tones that combine to make a bubbly mauve bath with silver shimmer that is super moisturising and will lull you to sleep!

Speaking of Wiccy Magic Muscles, this was definitely a favourite. With all the hours the Hubby and I have been putting in at work recently we have been left incredibly achy. Wiccy Magic Muscles released all out aches and pains and although it obviously contains some menthol elements it does not bring me out in a rash like Tiger Balm and Vicks does. In fact I found the warming sensation of Wiccy Magic Muscles very pleasant.

Old Father Time soap is my new favourite soap. I have a block in the downstairs bathroom in my house and the whole of the downstairs smells of it. I love this spicy redcurrant and thyme soap and not only does it smell amazing but it looks beautiful too. I believe this is also a Christmas edition but I loved it so much that I snapped some up in the Boxing day sale (along with some other items which I will review when they arrive)
You will see my reviews of the Santa Baby lip tint and lip scrub that I picked up in store in an upcoming post so I'll just say this: I liked them a lot!
I absolutely loved the toffee / caramel smell of the Yog Nog bath bomb when I smelled it in my local Lush so I grabbed one to try however I found as soon as the bath bomb hit the water that amazing scent disappeared and although this bath bomb is incredibly moisturising it left a disgusting yellow greasy ring around my bath which I had to scrub off once I was done bathing. Needless to say I will not be ordering this one again. I did however snap up some of the Yog Nog soap in the Boxing Day sale so hopefully I will get that amazing scent without the greasiness.

The Indifferent:
That's not to say that these products were bad I enjoyed most of them, probably not enough to buy them again though.

The first product that didn't really wow me was the Sex Bomb bath bomb that may just be because I expect to love it a lot more than I did. The scent was OK and the floating flower was a nice touch (even if it did look like little jellyfish in my bath when it broke up!) but compare to the loveliness of Twilight this was nothing.

The second product I'm indifferent about is the Charity Pot. The lovely people at Lush popped some in to my order as a free sample but I found the scent way too strong. Having said that I stupidly allowed myself to get rather sunburnt one day and this cream was very soothing on burnt skin.

Lush also sent me a free sample of Dirty Shower Gel. I gave this to the Hubby as he loves minty shower gels but he found this one wasn't minty enough for his tastes. He prefers the ones that give that minty, tingly, cold burning sensation!

Another bath bomb that failed to wow me was the Dashing Santa. This was also part of the Merry Christmas gift box and when I got it out of the box it smelt amazingly citrussy like satsumas but when I dropped it in the bath this smell didn't really come across.

I also wasn't much of a fan of the Father Christmas bath bomb that came in this gift box. If you're a fan of Lush' sweeter products like Snow Fairy you will probably love this but I found it way too sweet.

The Cinders bath bomb was OK the scent was pleasant enough and the crackling popping candy was a cute touch but I just didn't LOVE it like some people do.

The Rose Queen bath bomb smelt lovely with a strong lavender, hibiscus and marigold scent but cleaning up all those petals after bathing was just a bit much especially if you like to bathe just before bed like me!

And finally the last product that I tried and am indifferent about is the Reindeer Rock soap. I quite like Lingonberry but found this one just a little too sweet for my liking.

So all in all I think this was a pretty good haul. To get only one thing I disliked out of this many is pretty good going!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
