At the Movies: Goddess

I have been wanting to see Goddess ever since I first saw a trailer for it about a year ago. I received free tickets to see the movie from Nuffnang but by the time I got around to using them there were no more showings in our area so when Goddess came out to rent on DVD I snapped up a copy.

Goddess is a fabulously campy musical movie with a fantastic cast. The Goddess of the title is Elspeth Dickens (Laura Michelle Kelly) a mum of young twins whose husband James (Rowan Keating) is working at sea tracking whales in the Southern Ocean. In order to stay in touch James gives Elspeth a web cam but when she can't reach him Elspeth sets up a website singing her 'sink songs'. Elspeth becomes an internet sensation and attracts the attention of Cassandra Wolfe (Magda Szubanski) a Sydney advertising executive who needs a new face for the launch of the Goddess Laptop. Elspeth must chose between her chance at stardom and her family left behind back in Tasmania.

The film is the second feature by Mark Lamprell, and it is based on a one-woman show titled Sink Songs by South African cabaret performer Joanna Weinberg, who co-wrote the screenplay with Lamprell.

Goddess is a fantastic feel good movie that is incredibly campy and corny at times (especially the ending) and would make a great movie or a girls night in!
